Watch the appeal

Footage from the affected hamlets, and what the community in Ireland is doing about it.

What happened in Nariño

Earthquakes and forest fires struck remote hamlets in the municipality of Los Andes, around the town of Sotomayor, in the department of Nariño. The fires spread from several causes, including an electrical short circuit and fallen high-voltage power lines. An official census records the damage family by family, across 90 affected families.

Two in three of those families lost the irrigation hose that carries water to their crops and homes. For more than a third, the hose is the only thing they lost, and the only thing standing between them and a working farm. One household lost the hose feeding the local aqueduct and has no drinking water.

What the census records

  • Irrigation hose and water lines burned, in most families surveyed
  • Banana, coffee, cassava, maize and cocoa crops destroyed, in about a third
  • Pastureland and fencing burned
  • Ten households lost a home, farmhouse or storage shed
  • Work tools and kitchen equipment lost

Where the money goes

Aid is bought and delivered against the verified damage assessment. The priority list agreed with the community on the ground:

  • Emergency food for families who lost their crops and stores
  • School supplies so children can keep studying
  • Household basics: pots, bedding, cleaning supplies
  • Farm tools: machetes, hoes, shovels, gloves
  • Irrigation hose and fittings to restore water access
  • Seeds and seedlings: coffee, banana, cassava, maize, cocoa
  • Crop recovery inputs: fertiliser, soil treatment, transport
  • Building materials: zinc roofing, timber, cement, nails
  • Priority support for children, pregnant women, older adults and people with disabilities

Who is behind this

United for Colombia is an independent group of Colombian residents in Ireland. We are not a foundation or a company. We came together after the disaster to raise funds and get aid to families the emergency response has not reached.

Aid is delivered on the ground through the FUNDASSUE Foundation (NIT 900983706-3), a Colombian non-profit working in social development and support for vulnerable communities. FUNDASSUE is our logistics channel in Colombia, and invoices for purchased aid are issued in its name.

No organiser takes any payment from this campaign. Every euro raised goes to relief, and we publish transfer certificates, invoices, photographs and a final report.
